WEDNESDAY

My goodness! It has been a very long time since I posted here - my appologies! It feels like we are racing to the end here, with units to finish off, Christmas Concert to practise and Christmas activities to do. What  a fun and busy time!

Today we started by working on our creative writing stories and then gym with Mr Driedger. We also had chapel today, and I spoke, challenging kids to remember what they read in the Bible, and to really live it out in their everyday.

This afternoon we had Christian Ethics, and then a fantastic presentation from Sask Abilities Council. Bill talked to us about how to live in and around farms in a safe way, and he gave us a whole envelope of fun goodies!

Wow - it is chilly out there! We are hoping for a break in this cold, as I think everybody is getting a touch of cabin fever! We are also getting a touch of Christmas fever! We are well into our Christmas practises - and if I might boast for a minute - I think our recorders are sounding TERRIFIC!!
We are marching through our math - and we have just about finished unit 2 on estimation and mental math. We will probablly have a test in a couple of weeks.
Our major test for this week is Social Studies tomorrow, but at our review game I think everybody was doing well, so I am looking forward to good things tomorrow!
We are also wrapping up our unit on Habitats and Communities. It has been a long unit, but we have learned so many interesting things!

Today was a very exciting day! We had our usual morning with Math and ELA, but then we had Christmas Concert practise and chapel. Mr Peters spoke today about digging down deep into God's word. What a neat challenge.

This afternoon we had science and computers. Mrs Bill came and showed us a piglet disection. It was fascinating to see how the insides really work! We have been talking about all sorts of animals, their adaptions and their homes. So far we have talked about Forests, Deserts, Grasslands and today we moved onto talking about watery homes (fresh & salt water).  WE LOVE SCIENCE!

MONDAY

Hi!
Welcome back to another busy, but fantastic week at school! It is nice to see the weather clearing up a little for our field trip, but it might still be a cool day, so dressing warm would be a good idea.

We worked very hard today, especially  in Math, Social and Christian Ethics.  We are learning to estimate in math, discovering how wonderful our province is in social and best of all, finding out how God loved us so much that he made a huge sacrifice for us.

For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be  sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

THURSDAY

Today was a busy day at school! We started the day by watching the high school students do drama for chapel. They were doing skits from the Old Testament. We did some work with math and then finished off all of our work for our science reports. I am excited to see what our students have done! God is so creative in all of his wonderful creation!!

TUESDAY

Today was a great day! It started out a little scary as we drove to school with the icy roads, but we had a lot of fun at school. We made a word search from our spelling words, then worked on our math. I am pleased to see how hard students are working to figure out their math. During ELA, I assigned students the job of writing a paragraph with a good topic sentence. I think that it was tough assignment, and these grade 4's rose to the challenge. We are going to be spending a lot of time working on topic sentences and summarizing this year.
This afternoon we had basketball for gym and then for health we wrote poems about the the food groups. They are very funny and well done! Maybe you can even convince your child to say their's for you!
Finally this afternoon we worked on our recorders. WOW!!!! We are playing music now, and I am BLOWN AWAY by how great they are sounding. Keep up the good work, grade 4!

SNOWY TUESDAY

Wow! Winter has arrived! What a chilly day! We had a great day here inside school however, with math, spelling and library this morning, and science and social studies this afternoon. We have been looking at  animal's habitats (you might have seen the great projects that your child has done!), and we have been amazed at God's creativity in all the adaptations and variety in his creation.

We are looking forward to our field trip to the forestry farm next Wednesday. Likely it will be  chilly day, so please ensure that your child dresses warm.  I do still need a couple forms and some money for the field trip, so please send that with your child.

Stay warm!

Wow, Wednesday already! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! Time flies the week after a long weekend! It has been a busy last week. I was gone to a wedding on Friday afternoon, and Ms Amanda Hiebert was substituting for us. She left a note to say that the grade 4 class was really good and she enjoyed being here.

There is a note coming home with students telling about our fun night and other upcoming activities... I have also included a copy here.

OCTOBER HAPPENINGS…
It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of our first month at school! Time has flown! It has been a great month, and we are looking forward to an excellent year!

October is going to be a very busy month with Thanksgiving weekend coming up, our family fun night on the 21st and Spiritual Emphasis week over the 18th - 22nd .

We started our new music unit : learning recorder! I ask students to practice every day, and it will get better, I promise!! Thanks for being patient with our squawking for a while!!! Please send $2 to help cover the costs of the recorders.

I usually do not give students much homework, but we are always under a deadline to get math done, so you may see that coming home. I always tell kids that getting their parents to help is great! That way they will have an opportunity to work one –on-one with you and maybe understand it differently than how I present it. Homework is not a punishment, but an opportunity to finish and understand.

Our Family Fun Night is on Oct.21st this year from  5-8pm. Thanks  to the parents who have already sent along candy for prizes. We are doing a circus theme.  I am asking parents to sign up for a half hour slot on that evening. Please let me know if you are able to help.

Finally, we will be going on another field trip on the 3rd of November, to the Forestry Farm. If you are able to volunteer to chaperone, please contact me at the school or email me. I would love to be able to take most parents with us this year!
It is always great to meet you and spend some time getting to know you!

Blessings!
Carie

THURSDAY

Wow! These early dismissal days always seem to be gone before we know it!!! We had a kind of mixed up day today with timetables, but got through math, ELA and science this morning before we went to go watch a presentation in the gym. It was really neat:  missionaries from Indonesia and Korea to Canada were here to share about why they are missionaries.  They did some acting and singing for us, and wore beautiful traditional clothing.
This afternoon was really fast with a half hour of basketball and some recorder practise before home time.
WHEW! Busy, busy, busy!

WEDNESDAY

Today we started our new Math unit on place value. It is encouraging to see our class doing so well in math! This morning we had a great chapel, with Mrs Ehmann speaking and some of our own grade 4's leading worship (thanks!). This afternoon we spent some  time looking at what Saskatchewan is like. What a neat province we live in.  During science we talked about food chains & webs and how different groups of animals live together in different biomes and rely on each other for food.  We are starting our science projects on biomes during the next class, and I am expecting to see great things!!!

Wow - this week has just escaped me! I don't know what I've been doing since Wednesday, but sorry for the lack of postings!
Although today started out wet and miserable, it soon turned into a gorgeous fall day. We got to see a quick presentation from the Ride 4 Refuge team, who raised a lot of money for the homeless in Saskatoon. We are really proud of our high school students!!

This afternoon we started our new arts unit: Music!! For music we are going to learn how to read music and play the recorder! I know this is a little bit of a painful listening experience at first, but take heart parents, it will get better!!

Its hard to believe its the middle of the week already! We had a wonderful chapel this morning, led by Mrs Priebe's Grade 4 class. They were talking all about planting the seed, watering it and taking care of new baby Christians!  This afternoon we had a rousing game of soccer - girls vs boys... with a final score of ZERO - ZERO!!! What a fun game! We also solved the mystery of the food groups and started work on our art project... building a plastercine Saskatchewan. Thanks to Mrs Priebe and Ms Thiessen for their good idea!

We had a very chilly but good day at school today.  It is definitely time to bring on the toques and mitts - recess is cold out there!! I am not sure what happened to fall, but it looks like we're barreling ahead with winter! The soup lunch fund raiser was a big hit today, and we look forward to other big events like that in the future. Two to keep in mind are PJ day and picture day coming up this week. THURSDAY - FIELD TRIP DAY!!

We had a very cold, but wonderful day at the Western Development Museum! The morning started with a threshing demonstration, which was very interesting. We got to see how it was done in the old days and how the use of horses and then steam and gas power has really changed farming as we know it.
Thank you so much to our chaperones: Mrs Quiring, Mrs Prium and Mrs Fehr. You are wonderful!

These are some pictures that I got from the Western Development Museum web site.
Enjoy!

This afternoon we spent some time looking at the shape of Saskatchewan and how it is laid out on the map, and we will continue to examine some prairie culture tomorrow at the Western Development Museum.
This afternoon during Christian Ethics, we talked about how much Jesus loves to fellowship with us, and we had several acting stars do a drama for us about some of Jesus' disciples. (Thanks to Austin, Cassie, Celine, Aleah & Mikayla for working through recess to get ready.)

THURSDAY

What a miserable day! Once again we are back to rain, but fortunately, it was a wonderful day indoors! We are making excellent progress on our science unit, learning all about habitats (we were looking at producers and photosynthesis today), and working hard at math.

Just a general note about math - we are doing our best to get through the curriculum in a  timely manner, which means that often kids will have a question or two to do at home. This is actually a great thing, because they get a chance to work one -on - one with you and ask any questions they might be unsure of.

MONDAY MADNESS

Welcome back to another fine week of school! We  started off the week today with spelling. Students do have some words to practice for Friday. In math we began our new unit on patterns. We had a bit of a shakey start, but I'm sure we'll get back into the swing of thinking about math soon! We also started a new unit in Science on Animals and their habitats, and we will be talking and reading about it in English Language Arts as well over the next several weeks.  In our Christian Ethics class today, we talked about what it means to be a Christian. We figured out that it has nothing to do with our parents, but that it came down to a personal relationship with God. We made some awesome "Wordless Bracelets" and students should be able to explain what they all mean.

HOMEWORK:

FRIDAY - 2nd day of School

Today was a very busy and fun day! We spent a lot of time talking about school rules and figuring out how our classroom is going to be this year. We also started our math and social units by working on math flash cards and making our classroom flag. This afternoon was really fun with art and gym. We started making animals for our Habitats and Communities unit in Science and decorating our notice board. For Gym we went out onto the field and did a bunch of relay races. What an excellent day!
I am  looking forward to another great and busy week on Monday!

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Dear Parents

I am so excited to be one of the 2010- 2011 Grade 4 teachers this year, along with Mrs Barb Priebe! I have returned to the Saskatoon area after teaching for 3 years in Eston, SK and it is wonderful to be home in Prairie Spirit!

Our first Parent/ Teacher meeting is not until the evenings of November 24th and morning of November 25th. Please mark it on your calendars because it will be an important time to go over homework, grading, discipline and any concerns you or I might have. I am really looking forward to meeting you on that day, but I would be happy to meet with you before that if you would like.

In an effort to keep us all on the same page, I have a classroom blog, which you can access at <http://www.misstimmsgrade4.blogspot.com>. I will update this website at the end of every day, so that you can check on homework, assignments, and upcoming events. HOWEVER, it is vitally important that students use their day planners every day, as it is the best means of communication between you and I, and organization is an essential skill to learn for high school (and life!). I will be checking their agendas every day, and request your help with encouraging this.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns, and I will happily arrange a time to meet with you. You may either call the school or email me at carrie.timm@spiritsd.ca

Again, looking forward to getting to know you and your children this year!

Regards,
Carie Timm
